Why go here?
This leg goes from a beach hotel outside Tunis to the Colosseum to a factory where they hand-build cars that cost more than my house. Rome and Emilia-Romagna in two days is a lot, but it's also how you discover you can eat tortellini for breakfast. Nobody's stopping us.
Getting there: LA to Tunis, home from Bologna
I checked SNA and LGB, and LAX won again. Kayak had LAX to Tunis for $399 and Bologna to LAX for $399 (Kayak). In between, Tunis to Rome runs about $61 one-way (Orlero).
Total cost for flights: about $859 per adult (fares seen Oct 2026; they change daily)
Where we're staying
- Le Palace, Gammarth. The teams' starting hotel, from about 215 TND (about $75) a night (District Hotels).
- B&B Roma Monti, Rome. A walk from the Colosseum, at €80–120 a night (B&B Roma Monti).
- Hotel Principe, Modena. An easy base for the car country, with rooms from €76 (Hotel Principe).
Total cost for 3 nights: about $148 per adult, two sharing (Le Palace $75 + Roma Monti €120 + Principe €76, about $295 total)
Stop 1: The Colosseum
The teams' first Rome clue was outside, but we're going in. It's €18, with timed entry, and the ticket covers the Forum and Palatine too (Colosseo). Book ahead, wear real shoes, and give the Forum an hour after.

Running cost: about $20 per adult
Stop 2: The Detour, Foot or Hoof
Foot sent teams to the giant marble foot of Constantine in the Capitoline Museums courtyard. Hoof sent them to the horse statue at the Vittoriano. I'd do Foot, because you get a whole museum with it. It's €15 for non-residents (Musei Capitolini). Then I'd walk to the Vittoriano anyway, since admiring it from outside costs nothing.

Running cost: about $37 per adult
Stop 3: Train to car country
Italo runs Rome to Bologna from €19.90 (Italo), then a regional train to Castelfranco Emilia is from €4 (Omio). A shuttle from the station takes you to Pagani.
Running cost: about $63 per adult
Stop 4: Pagani (Roadblock)
The teams' Roadblock had them ride in a Pagani Zonda. We can't do that, but the guided museum and factory tour is €65 (Modenatur). You watch the craftspeople at work on cars most of us will only ever see on posters. If you just want the museum, it's €18.
Running cost: about $136 per adult
The Pit Stop: Sant'Agata Bolognese
The leg ended in the town square of Sant'Agata Bolognese, home of Lamborghini. While we're here, the Lamborghini museum (MUDETEC) is €18 (Bologna Welcome). Walk into that square looking like you just drove a supercar. That's where we'd meet Phil!
Running cost: about $156 per adult
Total cost of this leg for Pit Stop Passport racers: about $1,163 per adult (estimate, two adults sharing rooms: flights $859 + hotels $148 + activities $156. It doesn't include meals, the Rome Metro, taxis to Sant'Agata or tips. Prices checked Oct 2026, at €1 ≈ $1.12, and they will change.)
Family Pit Crew
Kids get a lot of this leg free, and the car factory is a guaranteed hit. I'd give Rome a full day and do the car stops the next morning.
Age rules, stop by stop
| Stop | What the rules say |
|---|---|
| Colosseum | Free under 18, but you still book a free ticket online. Under-12s must be with an adult (Colosseo). |
| Capitoline Museums | Reduced ticket €9.50, free under 6 (Musei Capitolini). |
| Pagani museum and factory | €25 for ages 13–18, free up to 12, and under-18s need an adult. Under-3s can't go into the factory (Modenatur). |
| Lamborghini MUDETEC | €6 under 19, free under 5 (Bologna Welcome). |
What I'd skip with kids. I'd skip the factory tour with a toddler and do the museum only. I'd also skip the Forum in midday heat and save it for the cool late afternoon.
Family-friendly places to stay
- Casa Simpatia, Rome. A quadruple room for €149 (Casa Simpatia).
- Hotel Principe, Modena. Family rooms from €76 (Hotel Principe).
- Modena Station Suites (budget-friendly). Family rooms from €97, right by the station.
Total cost for the Family Pit Crew: about $4,165 (estimate for two adults and two kids under 12: four sets of flights at $859 with kids at the adult fare = $3,436; Le Palace 1 night = $75; Casa Simpatia 1 night = about $167; Hotel Principe 1 night = about $85; Colosseum for two adults = about $40, kids free; Capitoline for two adults plus two reduced tickets = about $55; trains for four at the adult fare = about $107; Pagani for two adults = about $146, kids free; MUDETEC for two adults and two kids = about $54. It excludes meals, taxis and tips. Prices checked Oct 2026.)
